Sit and go tournaments
In a one table sit and go usually only the top three players win money. Therefore the name of the game is get to the top three! To win your playing style must change as there are fewer and fewer players. You must start out very tight then loosen up as the tournament progresses.
I like one table sit and go tournaments. Usually at a low dollar buy in table only about four out of ten players are any good. Hopefully you are one of the good ones! It’s easy to spot the bad players, there the loose players. At the start of the tournament you should play very tight don’t bet unless you have a big hand and don’t call big bets. Sit back and let the loose players self destruct. This is also the time to watch the good players, remember how they bet when they have a big hand and how they bet when bluffing. Figuring out the other players will be the difference between first and third.
Once the field is narrowed down to five players start playing more hands and when you catch a good hand make big bets and raises. If you’ve got the best hand (the nuts) go all in and hopefully double up. Your main focus at this stage should be to make it to third place. Don’t be afraid to fold, don’t call big bets chasing a draw and don’t go on tilt if you loose a big pot. Patients is your best friend in a sit and go.
When your in the top three you are up against good players. It’s been my experience that once a player gets in the money they loosen up and become impatient. Try to take advantage of this by sticking to a tight game. The other players will start to bluff and bet big with weak hands to try and push you out. This is when I try to set traps and bust them.
Remember to be patient, stick to your strategy and try to act instead of react. This will put you in the money consistently.
